More Resting, Less Nesting

Things are getting real for me as I near my delivery date with baby number two. I have admittedly been a bit high strung as the nesting reflex has kicked on in full force. At work I have been dashing about like mad to tie up all my loose ends and make sure everything is covered while I’m on leave. At home it has been a combination of wild bouts of cleaning and tidying followed by crashing on the couch, depleted.

I also have to add that cleaning up behind a toddler who is bent on making messes is exhausting and not a good use of my time. At this point, I think it’s more of a compulsion, which has led to me being overstimulated and teetering on burnout.

Being a mom is hard. Being a heavily-pregnant mom of a teething 1 year old is really hard. Sometimes I need to step away for a few minutes to regroup. Luckily, I have a pretty fantastic husband, who has been more than patient with me the last few weeks.

It’s difficult when you find yourself getting easily frustrated and frequently needing a break. I’ve always found it tough to admit that I’m not supermom and I can’t always do it all. Now you factor in pregnancy hormones and all the physical discomforts that come from being nine months along and it could be disastrous.

I always used to have a voice in my head telling me to be grateful cause it could always be worse. And while that is very true, the fact is that things are rough at the moment, but they won’t always be. That is the key takeaway here.

If you find yourself struggling in the mom department, that’s okay. Tomorrow is a new day. Take the break you need, ask for help to get you through and focus on being better tomorrow. All the things that you think are so important in the moment can wait.

It is going to be a whole new world when we bring home our new bundle of joy in the next few weeks. I need to soak up the time I have with my son and steal as many hugs as I can instead of worrying over all the details.

At the end of the day, tickling the toddler and making him laugh is more important than fishing half a dozen blocks out from under the couch.
